Mark Latham dials up the heat on the Defence imam

The heat is increasing over Defence’s decision to appoint a Hizb ut Tahrir sympathiser as the Defence imam.

Mark Latham spoke to 2GB’s Ben Fordham yesterday, stating this:

“The chilling statistic is that more Muslims in Australia have joined Islamic State as foreign fighters than have joined the Australian Defence Force. So the imam there doesn’t seem to be needed.

I’m very worried that he’s given any support to Hizb ut Tahrir and I also see where he’s provided support for introducing Sharia law through the family courts…

…I don’t think this is a very good appointment. He’s been there a while, he doesn’t seem to be getting any success. I think it might be time to discretely move him on and get back to the basics of a good fighting force…”

Indeed.

You can listen to the full interview here – it focuses on the Defence imam from about the 6:25 mark.

And Mark Latham and Ben Fordham are not the only ones reporting on this farce. It’s also hit Daily Mail with reporter Stephen Johnson writing today:

“The Australian Defence Force’s chief imam signed a petition protesting against a push by former prime minister Tony Abbott to ban Islamist extremist group Hizb ut-Tahrir.

Sheikh Mohamadu Nawas Saleem added his name to this petition in February 2015 after Mr Abbott proposed to prohibit the group, which campaigns for a global Islamic caliphate based on sharia law.

Now, federal Attorney-General George Brandis is again rejecting a call for that group to be banned, despite its recent calls for ex-Muslims to be killed and its advocacy of domestic violence.”

Hizb ut Tahrir should be banned. And the Defence imam should be sacked for backing them.

I’ll be launching a petition later today seeking exactly that.
